Chapter 28

Crossing

“The ward will protect against fire and that nasty metal claw, and we can go one at a time, but that’s assuming there’s only one type of attack.”

Unnamed again pointed out toward the distant platform.

“It stopped the rock about a third of the way through, so there could be another two or three attacks before we reach the other platform.”

Vella nodded. “And you’re not sure whether you’ve got enough mana to protect something for the whole journey?”

“Exactly. I figure we should test it first. Time isn’t an issue, and I’d feel a lot more comfortable with a test.”

That test, it was eventually agreed, involved a rock wrapped in strips of fabric torn from Tusk’s outfit. The half-orc promptly named the rock Lil Bubba, handing it to Unnamed as the bloodmancer summoned a ward and sent it out into the void.

Tusk stood saluting as the wrapped chunk of stone began its voyage, muttering a butchered rendition of a tune typically delivered via military bugle.

The ward was much larger than it needed to be, simulating the size required to fully surround Naleth, the largest in their party. Unnamed also infused it with sufficient properties to resist heat and hover above the ground, increasing the pressure on its nearest side so that it also hovered directly toward the second platform.

Predictably, as Lil Bubba reached nearly a third of the distance, metal claws lunged upward from the smokey depths, trying and failing to claw through the ward. They scraped against the protective barrier, pincers snapping as they tried to gain purchase.

Even though they failed to grab hold of the stone, fire still erupted from below, and Unnamed carefully tracked his mana usage as the ward continued moving. He’d assumed that the movement would reduce the amount of fire damage sustained, but soon realized that whatever was producing the fire followed Lil Bubba as it continued moving toward the second platform.

The continual burst of fire took a heavy toll on the ward, rapidly draining Unnamed’s mana reserves as it reached the midpoint of the gap, and a second metal claw shot up from the depths. Both claws followed the ward, trying with manic single-mindedness to breach the shield while a continual burst of flames accompanied them.

A moment later, the ward faltered and failed, sending Lil Bubba tumbling to its death—or, more accurately, tumbling half a foot to the two waiting claws that promptly pinned it in midair a moment after the ward failed.

The fire eventually ceased, after the strips of cloth surrounding the stone had been burned to oblivion. Then the claws retreated, taking their prize with them.

“LIL BUBBA!” Tusk cried out, falling to his knees and playing out a mixture of the classic death scene from Platoon and William Shatner shouting, “Khan.”

Naleth seemed genuinely distressed by the display, grimacing as he kneeled down next to Tusk and softly patted his back.

“He was so young,” Tusk said, wiping a fake tear from his eyes. “Had all his life ahead of him.”

Vella rolled her eyes. “You mean the rock you just picked up, like, two minutes ago?”

The half-orc nodded.
